The Complete Buyer’s Guide to Custom Metal Signs

Almost every question about ordering metal signage reduces to two: what the sign is made of, and how it is going onto the building. Get those right and the artwork looks after itself.

This guide covers both, plus the details — gauge, corner radius, fixings, reflective grade — that decide whether a batch arrives ready to install or merely correct.

Start with where it is going

Indoors, on a wall, read from six feet: almost anything works, so choose by how it should look. Outdoors, exposed, read from thirty feet: the material is doing most of the work and the choice narrows fast.

The two questions that settle it are whether the sign will get wet and whether it will be read in the dark. Wet rules out anything that will rust from a drilled hole outward. Dark rules out anything without reflective sheeting.

Aluminum gauge is not a detail

.040 inch aluminum is the standard panel and is entirely adequate up to about three feet. Beyond that it starts to flex on its fasteners, and a panel that flexes will eventually oil-can — that shallow permanent wave you see on cheap signage.

.063 is the answer for anything larger, anything in wind, and anything mounted low enough to be knocked. It costs slightly more and removes an entire failure mode.

When you need composite instead

Aluminum composite panel is two thin aluminum skins bonded to a solid core. It stays flat at widths where single-skin metal ripples, which matters enormously on a shopfront lit from the side, because raking light makes every ripple visible from across the street.

It also routes cleanly, so a composite sign does not have to be a rectangle. If your logo has an outline worth cutting, this is the material that will hold it.

Reflective grades, briefly

Engineer grade is the general-purpose sheeting: yards, car parks, plant rooms, pedestrian areas, slow traffic. High-intensity prismatic is roughly three times brighter and belongs wherever vehicles move at speed or the sign is far off the light source.

A reflective sign photographs strangely under flash and looks unremarkable in daylight. Judge it at night with a torch, which is the only condition it was specified for.

Printed, engraved or cut

Printing puts full color on a flat face and is right for the overwhelming majority of signage. Engraving into brushed anodized aluminum cuts to bright metal and is the traditional look for plaques read at arm’s length. Laser cutting removes material entirely so the sign casts a shadow and reads as fabricated.

The three are not interchangeable and cost is not the deciding factor. A cut steel monogram in a reception says something a printed panel cannot, and a printed panel on a plant room door says everything a cut one would waste.

Fixings decide the install day

Corner holes, top-only holes, keyhole slots, countersunk fixings, standoff barrels, cleat rails, Z-clips or adhesive. Each one implies a different wall and a different installer.

Tell us how it is going up when you order and the sign arrives drilled to your centres. The alternative is somebody on a ladder with a cordless drill and a sign that is now scratched.

The finished sizes, the material you are leaning toward, roughly how many, where each one is going, and whatever artwork you have. If the logo only exists as an old photograph, send the photograph — we redraw it as vector art free and show it on the sign at actual size.
